History
The documented history of Sedgefield begins with the turn of the century. Over the years the Club has enjoyed a wide variety of changes.
The land that is now the Sedgefield Country Club was part of a 4,000 acre hunting preserve owned by John Blackwell Cobb, a wealthy industrialist. Cobb died in 1923 and his daughters sold most of the property to a group incorporated as Sedgefield, Inc. The leader of the group was A.W. McAlister, a prominent Greensboro businessman whose avid interest in golf led to the incorporation of Sedgefield Country Club in 1925. On October 24, 1925, memberships were accepted and the Donald Ross designed golf course opened with S.B. Miller as first Manager.
In those early days, amenities for members, in addition to golf and tennis, included riding lessons and fishing in a large private lake. The Sedgefield Inn, today a landmark in the community, was built in 1925. The Manor House served as the first Clubhouse and Andy Gray, born in Scotland, was the first Golf Pro. During the Great Depression, Sedgefield, Inc. and Sedgefield Country Club were dissolved. In 1951, the Inn was purchased by the Sedgefield Hotel Corporation and restored to use for conventions, meetings, and social functions. In 1967 the Inn was purchased by the membership of Sedgefield Country Club and, until the summer of 1992, it served as both Clubhouse and Hotel.
The original Inn/Clubhouse was completely renovated during 1992-1993. Renovation of the Inn permitted the members to maintain this historical Tudor building while eliminating the hotel rooms and combining all the wonderful conveniences of a Country Club.
Over the years the configuration of the golf course changed many times, for a variety of reasons. For many years (1938-1961) it was the alternate site of the Greater Greensboro Open with Starmount Forest Country Club. Then, for 16 years, Sedgefield hosted the GGO through 1976. In 2007, the course was restored to the original Donald Ross design and in 2008, the GGO returned home to Sedgefield Country Club as the Wyndham Championship.
On February 1, 2011, Sedgefield Country Club was purchased by McConnell Golf. Immediate improvements to the facilities began including an updated clubhouse interior, significant landscaping upgrades, and golf course work. Immediately after the 2011 Wyndham Championship in August, ground broke on a new Fitness Center, which will feature the latest in state-of-the-art equipment, massage therapy and much more. The Fitness Center is expected to open in the summer of 2012.
Sedgefield Country Club is truly a marvel to behold, offering all the amenities of a first class Country Club housed in an elegant Tudor building constructed at the turn of the century and continually refined for the discerning tastes of Sedgefield Country Club's membership.
Sedgefield Country Club continues today as a symbol of tradition and culture in the community.
